Bonding with a blade of grass. To us it might seem that the grass is merely stuck to the bill of one of the Gannets, but this is actually a deliberate act. Offering of gifts is quite common, not just amongst Gannets. Is it a sign of being able to provide, perhaps symbolic nesting material before nest building and breeding starts in earnest, or a welcome back gift after a winter far away from their summer residence, or is it all of the above? I think it’s a combination, but more importantly, shows how gentle these, Britains biggest breeding seabirds, can actually be.
