The European hare (Lepus europaeus) is a widespread leporid native to Europe and parts of Asia. Known for its distinctive long ears and powerful hind legs, this swift runner can reach speeds of 35 mph when evading predators. Distinguished from rabbits by its larger size and black-tipped ears, it prefers open grasslands and agricultural areas. Unlike rabbits, hares bear fully-furred young above ground.
